To create a bright and cheerful party, check out these rainbow birthday party ideas:

  • Invitations: Rainbow birthday party invitations are perfect for a rainbow birthday! Check out Punchbowl to find a variety of designs you can use for rainbow birthday invitations. Select one that is both colorful and bright, then incorporate your invitation wording.
  • Cake: Purchase a rainbow birthday cake from your local bakery or make one yourself! Rainbow birthday cakes contain all the colors of the rainbow, of course. Incorporate these colors in a rainbow design on top of the cake. Bake a simple chocolate or vanilla cake, frost the cake with white frosting and decorate it with a rainbow using frosting or pieces of Skittles candies. Create clouds at the ends of the rainbow with small marshmallows. Another idea for a rainbow birthday cake is to bake six separate cakes in the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Mix food coloring with a white cake mix to create the colors. Once cool, stack the layers on top of each other in the above order and smear frosting in between each layer to keep them in place. Finally, frost the outside of the cake in white frosting and decorate!

  • Activity: Plan a rainbow birthday party activity to entertain the party guests. Make rainbow salt or sand jars with the children during the party. Collect clear jars to hold the salt or sand and pass one jar out to each child. Pass a paper plate out to each child and pour sand or salt on each. Simultaneously pass out pieces of purple chalk andi nstruct the kids to rub/scribble with the chalk in the sand or salt. Once it's purple, pour it into the bottom of the glass jar. Repeat the process with salt or sand and chalk all over again, until all of the colors of the rainbow are in the glass jar. Stick a toothpick down the side of the jar in multiple spots, and it will mix some of the colors together to make a teardrop effect!
  • Favors: Organize an activity to decorate shirts and have the kids take them home as party favors. Pass out shirts to the kids, and supply puffy paints in all the rainbow colors. Be sure to place a piece of cardboard in between the front and back of each shirt in order to prevent puffy paint seepage. Set the shirts aside to dry and pass them out to the kids as they leave the party.
For those kids that are especially active, offer an activity to fly rainbow kites during the party. Bubbles are also a fun outdoor activity.
